AI and photography
Every photograph and every frame of film on this site was made with a camera, by a person who was standing there.
No image here was generated
Nothing on this site was made by a generative model. No composite skies, no invented wildlife, no landscapes that do not exist. When you see the Torres lit orange at dawn, someone walked up in the dark and waited for that light.
We edit, as photographers always have: exposure, contrast, colour, dust removal, straightening a horizon. What we do not do is add or remove what was in front of the lens.
Why we are strict about it
A photograph of Patagonia is a claim about Patagonia. It says: this place exists, it looks like this, and it is worth protecting. The moment that claim might be invented, it stops being evidence and becomes decoration — and the conservation argument goes with it.
There is also something simpler. What we photograph is a moment: the light, the weather, the animal that decided to look up. A model can assemble something that resembles that moment. It cannot have been there for it. We do not think it ever will be, and we would rather be wrong about that than pretend we already are.
We are not against the technology
This is not a rejection of artificial intelligence. It is part of how society builds things now, and refusing to acknowledge that would be its own kind of dishonesty.
Our concern is more specific: the infrastructure behind these models consumes electricity and water on a scale that is still being measured, and it is being built quickly. We would like to see that development happen without damaging the landscapes it so often uses as training material — including this one. That seems like a reasonable thing to ask.
Our work and AI training
This site asks crawlers that collect material for model training not to take our photographs. We allow the crawlers that cite sources and send readers back, because that is an exchange rather than an extraction.
That request is a request. It is not enforcement, and we know it. If you want to use these images for anything, including training, write to us.
